Hello all,

Twistie needs help being snider than she normally is. I wonder if any of you can help me.

I have noticed for several years now that some of you, when you post, have figured out how to manipulate the code so instead of saying, "So-and-so-says/said" you say "So-and-so shrieked or "So-and-so bellowed" etc.

I have looked at the code and have tried omitting the word "quote" and manipulating some of the other words etc. but I can't seem to find the right combination of words/symbols. I end up saying "So-and-so shrieked said" which is not what I want to say at all and rather detracts from the snide impact I wish to make.

I have asked Mr. Twisting, a programmer/analyst, but he was singularly unhelpful and grouchy. Poo on him anyway. Crying or Very sad

Do you know what I want to do? Can anyone help me? This would come in especially useful when replying to certain vituperative or obnoxious posters and the whole forum could benefit from Twistie's snide wit.

Thank you.

Twistie

We guiltily realise that Twistie is a lady and resolve to modify the tone in our posts to suit this special fact in future. Then again, we don't normally "shriek" or "bellow" nor "holler" or show a vituperative mindset.
My New Year's resolution is to always reply kindly! Is that a deal?

Oh Roger, Roger, Roger--

Leave it to you to throw a wet blanket on my fun. Laughing

Anyone else?

Incidently, Rog,

Read my "New Years Resolutions" post to get an idea of how I plan to post in the coming year.

I just want some information just in case it might be needed sometime. Sheesh..... Rolling Eyes

I presume you are referring to putting things in bold or italic or underlining them, or making them larger using a more provocative color
or any combination of the above.

The answer is to look at the controls at the top of the box where you post. if you let our mouse hover over them you will see what each button does written in the line on top of the space you post your message in. The controls are a bit quirky, and for that reason I prefer to add the tags by hand, but you will get used to them.

Actually, though, I know how to put things in italics, etc., I am referring to posting a response which includes a quote. When you quote another poster, the box says, "So and so wrote."

I have noticed other posters substituting "wrote" with other words that are more interesting. How do I do, specifically, that?

Oh, it's real easy, Tamara, Actually I'm embarrassed I didn't figure it out earlier. I'm sort of lazy when it comes to computer stuff. I don't play around the buttons like a lot of people do.

What I had been doing was just to go to the "QUOTE" button by the poster's reply box and use that. That's like driving with automatic transmission.

This way that I learned is like manual transmission

Ok. Here's what you do. First, click on the BOLD button. An asterisk should appear. Then type what you want to say as far as "so and so quoted." so-and-so howled," any expressive way you want to say it. Then you click the BOLD button again because you don't want any more bold.

Then, Go three boxes over in your reply box to the QUOTE button. This should appear: [quote] Then after that you put the sentence9s} you want quoted. I still don't have all the kinks out of it. It still isn't doing what I want it to do some of the time, but I'm sure that's my problem. Keep hitting PREVIEW and going over it until it does what you want instead of just submitting it the first time.

Let's see if we can make it work right now. I want to say 'Twistie enthused, " THis way that I learned is like manual transmission."

Twistie enthused:

Quote:
THis way that I learned is like manual transmission

Viola!

Anyone can PM me if there's something you don't understand. We can make our writing a whole lot more colorful in 2005. Isn't that special. LOL Laughing

Y'know, Ouyang, I tried that and combinations thereof, but for some reason it just didn't come out for me. Well, I'll copy what you you just put and see if it works this time. Thanks.

Oh, ok. I just looked at it again--you did it without the word "quote" appearing---Oh, great. Tamara and others, take note. But I tried that and it didn't work for me before. Well, lemme try it again.

But you're still getting the word "Wrote" I don't want the word "Wrote" I want to substitute another word. I don't think your way will work, I've already tried it. The word "wrote" keeps appearing because that's what is programmed to appear.

Twisted Psych. 101,
Why don't you ask Mr. Twister how it's done? Cool
