Most of the new stuff I've heard has to do with technology I think but maybe there is more. For those out of country for awhile they may lose touch.
Besides all the bs words used to explain the US intrusion in another country (ie-insurgents-people protecting "their" country) I wonder about things like wi-fi-ing(sp?) and Blackberries-recently said to be unuseable on the airplane. What are these things and what else is out there lately?

Blackberry 6710

..Internet device
..Built-in speaker/microphone
..Integrates with ISP and corporate e-mail accounts
..Organizer and Web Browser
..International phone for travel in over 130 countries
..Full-featured organizer with PC synchronization

I looked it up online and it's a little black hand-held device.

Wi-Fi
Wi-Fi is short for "Wireless-Fidelity". This name has been popularized by Wi-Fi Alliance. Their website describes them as " A nonprofit international association formed in 1999 to certify interoperability of wireless Local Area Network products based on IEEE 802.11 specification."

"Insurgent" has been in use for a long time in the English language. It's just recently been given a new lease of life by politicians and the media.
Back in 1942, the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (English translation from that time) was formed, for example.

From random dictionary
insurgent
Function: noun
1 : a person who rises in revolt against civil authority or an established government; especially : one not recognized as belligerent
2 : one that acts contrary to the established leadership (as of a political party, union, or corporation) or its decisions and policies.

So, until the Iraqis actually choose a government, it would seem inappropriate to use this word to describe the whateveryouwanttocallthems in Iraq.

Here are a couple new tech words out of this week's
Newsweek:

VOIP:(actually an acronym, I guess)--for Voice-over-internet-protocol. A kind of telephone. But I'm not exactly sure what it is or does. Sorry. Embarassed

IPTV--Internet-protocol tv. Refers to television content sent over the net. I guess this is just tv over the internet, what Mr. T watches when I'm hogging the regular tv Laughing

Of course you probably already know:

TiVo--a noun and a verb, as in "I want my TiVo" or "I'm gonna TiVo this program." a device that allows you to watch a tv program whenever you want, or an action decsribing the same

blog/blogger----this came up during the recent presidential debates/conventions in the states. I'm not exactly sure of the exact defs for them, except they seem to be comments/commentators over the internet

IPod--is also a new word for a device that is making inroads in the youth culture. A device that can store thousands of tunes for play that you hook-up to your computer to download the music from

Thanks for starting this thread! Has made me aware of something I'm usually not aware of--all the new words that are constantly entering our language! Laughing

Blog/blogger--comes from weblog. A blog is a personal Internet opinion site. A blogger operates a blog.
(For example, my blog is http://ravensdriftingcloud.blogspot.com)
