I am going to visit my sister in near Mito, Ibaraki-ken. Don't know what to do around there.... so if anyone lives round that part, please advise. I lived in Japan for a year, so I have seen all around the country. Just interested in sticking around that area for Christmas. Staying with my sister, who is new to Japan...so could use some advice about sights to see in that area. |

hkgirlo,
I lived in Tsukuba City,in Ibaraki for 2 years before moving to Gifu. I cannot speak for Mito City itself, but there are definitely lots of great places that are not too far away.
For example:
Gunma, Fukushima, and the Nikko area are great for skiing and snowboarding.
Tokyo is easily accessible by train.
Nikko is also great for taking in some shrines and more historical sites. They also have lots of monkeys.
Owarai Beach is close and provides a great view of the ocean. I think there is also a very big aquarium there.
As far as things to do in Mito...can't help you.
It's difficult to recommend things without knowing what you prefer.

I believe Mito is home to one of Japan's "Big Three" gardens - Kairaku-en. The other two - Kenroku-en and Koraku-en - are in Kanazawa and Okayama respectively. Other than that, I don't know that there's much of interest in Mito proper.
I'd second the recommendation for Nikko . . . it's a beautiful place (though undoubtedly quite cold at this time of year). |

I have a lot of friends who have gone/are going to nikko onsen. Though I've never been there myself, I hear it's a wonderful place. |

Hi,
I live in Iwama Town, Ibaraki-ken; which is only about 30 minutes from Mito. I go there often and there is lots to do in the area. The garden that was mentioned in the previous reply is especially nice however I've only ever been in spring. In Mito there is a "foreigner" bar not far from the station. They are having a big Christmas and NewYear's party there and it's usually a pretty fun place to go and let loose. I'm sure if you're sister lives in Mito than she's probably been there; if not I'll give your directions. Check out the website for Ibaraki Prefecture; there are alot of really cool places to visit and things to do fairly close to Mito:

Yeah...Steve...apparently you work with my sister, Angie. Small world. We didn't actually do anything except shop while I was there, it was too cold and it snowed (which is an event all in itself). |
