I am currently teaching at a college in Henan. My contract will expire in July 2005. I would like to check out Nanjing for my next teaching job. During the Spring Festival holiday, I am going to spend a week or so there doing some looking around.
Can anyone give me some help on (1) places worth checking out to teach - uni's or other (2) places to stay while I am visiting there (3) getting there from Henan (4) anything else you can add, which would be useful to know.
Thanx for the help, tai xie-xie ni le.
HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL DAVE'S ADDICTS. |

I think Nanjing is a nice place to work and live in. A bit hot and humid in summer, but a nice place nevertheless. It has made big strides in its development. There is an international school there but I doubt they hire English teachers to teach English; their students hail from Germany and other countries and don't need this kind of stuff.
But you will no doubt find other schools.
As for housing, there is a youth hostel (visit www.chinayouthhostel.com). When I visited Nanjing I stayed at a university guesthouse. CHeap and centrally located. |

Nanjing University and Nanjing Normal University hire foreign teachers and is a great place to work. Nanjing is famous for education and full of Universities, because it was the ancient capital city before Beijing. The apartment they provide at Nanjing University is also extremely nice, but their qualifications for English teachers has been going up over the past, you may need an M.A. or even a Ph.D. There are tons of jobs in Nanjing city, so don't be afraid to be picky and shop around. There should be a train from Henan directly to Nanjing, it is a fairly big train station that has been undergoing rebuilding for a long time.
If it is a training school your looking for, New Orient (Xin Dong Fang) is the biggest and most reputable, but the Z visa may be difficult to get from them. The lady that will probably hire you, (Li Miao) will try to screw you out of as much money as possible, excuses about taxes, etc...
There is also a 'Modern English' training school on the 7th floor of the sufa daxia, Hong Wu Rd. The pay is great, at least 7000 RMB, but again the boss is horrible and they will try to give you an F visa not a Z visa, and they let you find an apartment yourself. Try the training schools as a last resort, because the Universities are better. If you need a hotel for a few days while finding an apartment, Nanyuan at Nanjing University is only 100-150 RMB per night and is fair as far as quality.
Good luck,
AB

First, I'd like to thank Amanda & Roger. Roger you are always so reliable and informative in your postings.
I'd really appreciate any other information about Nanjing anyone else can spare, as the time to leave is approaching very fast now.
Thanx |
