i'm sticking to the mainland for now, but someone has just asked me about what sort of TESOL course to take if you're going to Hong Kong next summer and will have two years of university by then. I suggested getting a CELTA. Any other thoughts? |

There are infinite threads on this subject here... If you aren't careful you will get flamed by the forum's resident troll who wil tell you to stay in the grim mainland and keep your peasant wife there (or some such).
Basically for the really top jobs in HK you need to have qualified teacher status in the UK e.g. B.Ed or PGCE. But I think there are language centres (paying much lower wages) that will take people with just CELTA. |

The CELTA is probably your best bet though I got by without one.
The thing is that it is a pretty tricky place to get a work permit for and unless you get an appropriate sponsor your chances of doing so are small.
Workwise, there are plenty of agents who will place you into regular middle and high schools there at around $200HK an hour. Private work can command up to HK500. There are lots of not strictly legal opportunities but you need to know where to look for them.
Permits are aviailable through a small-ish number of private language centres such as Ready to Learn. They used to pay around $14000 a month.
International schools in HK have their pick of the best talent from all over as the salaries and conditions are probably the best in Asia.
Hope this is of some use to you.
Best
