Hi,

What are the thoughts of Western ESL teachers in Indonesia about Schapelle Corbys 20 years?

Too much media pressure and critiscm on the Indo legal system and government from the Aussies hasn't helped matters.

Has anyone considered why an Aussie would want to be importing mary to a country that sells the stuff at a tenth of the price back home?

Evidently common sense is in equally short measures up in the senior Indo echelons as at street level.

Most of the Ozzie 'trial by televeision' case for the defence seems to be that because she's young and pretty (and Australian) she couldn't possibly be guilty. I am shocked and astonished by the xenophobic outpourings of their gutter press. I expected better.

Maybe She brought that stuff for australian people who live in Bali, Of course the price higher than her homev( Many drug dealer in Australia, soo difficult for her to compete). It is easy for Australian people to get drug from other australian than they buy from local drug dealer.

How do you know that stuff at a tenth of the price back home? Are you a drug user or a drug dealer?

If you are drug user or drug dealer, How do you get your drug? From CORBYS ?

while nothing has probably changed within the indonesian 'justice' system since i left in 2000, it is worth noting that this so called system was regarded then as one of the most unjust and corrupt justice systems in the world. Back handers and fat envelopes used to be the name of the game back then and that was even down to street level. Assuming not much has changed, it wud not surprise me (and this is whether or not she was guilty of this crime) if it was a matter of Corby's lawyers or family simply insufficiently paying off those necessary within the system.
I'd be interested in knowing whether the long-timers in Jakarta have heard of any serious clampdowns on corrupt officials. Yudiono has said it would be a top priority of his. Have there been any serious moves in this direction ?

I'm not confident about the legal system here, but now I am emarrased and horrified that Australians have terrorists who planned to kill innocent Indonesians. Shame Shame Shame!!!! Embarassed

I think Jreng should be using the students' forum rather than the teachers' forum.

Now that was mean Smile

Does show that none of these foreigners could ever aspire to reach the level of proficiency that we have.

Though in my 2 years in Indo I managed fluency level:

'I want to make love to 2 girls in 1 room, how much? can I drink your friend's coconut juice as you watch? My sausage is big - that is too expensive!!! - 1 more beer - my motorbike is f"kked - mosquito - monkey face'

2 years in China:

'can we make love in my room tonight - Yes I want to meet your mum - 3 bottles of beer, a packet of cigarettes & a lighter please - I'm lost - fried rice with beef/chicken/pork - kiss my a55 - this DVD does not work - yellow movie (porn) & the correct pronunciation of Mao Zedong'

Surprisingly, a lot of the better press has been quite restrained and one editorial spelled out carefully the difference in the legal systems.

Some points that stick in my craw are:

How come a bomb terrorist got 2.5 years?

How is it that the Bali judge has NEVER found one of 500 persons on trial not guilty? That's just against the law of averages.

The substance sent to the Embassy was harmless powder, and not a dangerous from the latest reports, but still inexcusable. Funny that the note with it was written in faultless Indonesian.

A reporter wandering around Kuta the night before last Friday's verdict was offered every kind of drug that he's ever heard of.

Actually it's McDonnell and the salary for working for this aircraft manufacturer are very good. So what's you're point vegetable nuts? I'm not assuming that you're addressing me, but as it was I who said you should be in the students' foum, I fear that is the case. Yes, I got a job as an English teacher because of my skin colour. Just as other white people do - Russians, Germans, French. Jeez!

I fear this reporter was lying through his teeth. He was probably offered two or three types of drug at the most. Not that that means anything, as the young lads in Kuta are famous for selling any old sh1te and claiming it's drugs. Usually some kind of herb with no psycoactive properties whatsoever.

Cardinal Synn, that's funny! As to the McD that flies buns in seats instead of selling fries and bun treats, they got bought out by Boeing, I think. Mebbe Jreng was thinking of the fat, female U.S. singer/actress/comedian/whatever. As to the ubiquitous availability of drugs, one of my faves happened in Gili Traw-however-it's-spelled. While walking down main drag one eve after day of diving, basking in the silence of no internal combustion engines (after months in Jakarta!), I was accosted by a couple of young local guys: "You want ecstasy?" "Tidak, no wanita" I joked back. "You want woman?" came his instant reply. Damn. I fully expected to wake up and hear 10,000 engines racing at 10,000 rpm any moment!

Hey I'm surprised she didn't get death. Ok so lets say she was set up by people in Australia like she said she was. Did the people setting her up say "hey lets plant thousands of dollars worth of drugs in some random persons surf board bag and hope that when she leaves the airport in Bali that our guy in Indonesia can recognize someone carrying a surf board bag full of thousands of dollars of drugs and approach her in Bali and ask for the drugs, yeah thats it! A perfect plan!" Shes a naive girl that thought her first world status and looks can get her clearance through a 3rd world small airport with out any problems because she thought she was better then them. Well the only thing I have to say is "have fun! Your 20 year vacation in beautiful Bali has just begun!"
