Why isnt there a Hungary forum?
Is it possible to find a relatively cheap apartment - under $400?
Is it possible to find a room in someone's home?
How easy is it to find a job other than teaching english?
ANY help would be greatly greatly appreciated!!!
Thank you, Renee |

there isnt a forum cos we dont whinge enough about getting one.
if you get a job with a state school youll get an apartment paid for...dunno about otherwise but 400 a month sounds a little cheap, at least for the city centre. maybe if you were in a suburb, not even too far out.
non teaching jobs...are you european? you can find the jobs but when teaching is so much easier, better paid and fun than working til 4 in the morning in a bar, why would you want to? also, you may need hungraian for all but the smelliest and most depressing jobs. |

I just wrote this on another thread, but it might interest you:

Rents in Budapest vary greatly... I had a friend who lived in Vrsmarty utca (i.e. right next to Andrssy ut!) and paid around HUF70,000/EUR290 a month. The appartment was very cosy, with a nice living room and a huge mezanine. Another friend shared a place with students near Batthyni tr and paid the ridiculous sum of HUF10,000/EUR40 a month for his rent. Granted, he was sharing with four other people, but the appartment was a gorgeous place of about 150 square meters. I paid around HUF35,000/EUR140 a month myself.
The price really depends on wether you're ready to share a place and the location. Buda in general is more expensive than Pest, except for certain areas like Andrssy/Vrosligeti fasor, Dek Ferenc tr... Belvros on the whole is pretty expensive, compared to other places in Pest. I'd definitely recommend looking in Joszefvros and the area between Rkoczi-Klauzl tr-Erszbet krut - lively areas, with the universities close by (Astoria et al - which could mean doing privates, although in summer it might be somewhat difficult), lots of bars, parties and such. |
As for finding work in Hungary, all the Hungarians I met seemed to say that if you really wanted to work there, you could find work. But, being a EU citizen is almost a sine qua non condition for finding legal work (unless you go through all the hassle for getting a working visa and all... I'm afraid I can't really help you out on this one, since I didn't need a working visa). Also, speaking Magyar will work marvels. Although there were loads of people who spoke okay to good English in Budapest, it will be of great help if you want to find a job other than teaching. But, it's still doable... |
