I am looking at trying to find work doing conversational english in china this summer, it`s either this or factory work. Have taught in main stream inner city schools in england as a supply teacher but do not have TEFL qualifications.
Bags packed already, just need the schools that are ok. ANY recommendations of agencys or schools would be great. Have been doing some of my home workhonest, just need a little help. Wink

Thanks

Hello Ged,

Welcome to the fun life that searching for a job in China brings. It might not be a bad idea to do a TESOL or TEFL certificate, but if you have your bags packed already then you might not have time. This site is a great place to search for jobs. Read over the job information journal first, there is a lot of great info in there from various teachers. Another site that you can try is: www.teach-in-china.com
it does not get that many posts on it, but it is another good place to start. Other then that just go to a search engine and type in esl jobs in china. That should keep you busy for a while,
all the best
Cody

Teaching English is more than just showing up and saying, "Hey, I speak English," so the certificate idea mentioned above would be a good idea. But if not, I don't mean to discourage you entirely by adding there is such a thing as Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) going around here in China. Because you hear little of it in England does not mean you can pay no attention to it. This thing is not settled here by a long shot in my non-scientific opinion. I believe it will have some effect on the summer teaching market this year.

OK, once you've convinced yourself that it's OK to come and have found some schools that you are interested in and have talked to them, I would suggest you come back to this forum and ask for more opinions, especially regarding the conditions offered and locality, before you make a definite decision.

Don't believe all promises and be wary of recruiters.

Good luck!

Summer is a short season. What about autumn and winter? Going back to foggy London?
Summer jobs in China are mainly for those already here and not williong to travel and enjoy themselves. It means teaching bored primary and middle school kids whose parents don't understand the idea of holidays. The kids hate school but who knows? NOt their parents.

Summer jobs don't usually come with a work visa. EIther you have one already, or else you will have to pitch in as an II.
