In 2001 Bush asked the world to get behind the US after the terrible tragedy of 911. The tragedy cost a couple of thousand lives. Now after the tsunami which has claimed at least 150,000 people America, and George Bush, is nowhere to be seen, except for a couple of condescending remarks of sympathy. Why? I presume it is because the US has no economic interests in the region which has been affected by the tsunami. It's a disgrace and yet another example of the incompetence of George Bush. I would be embarrassed to be an American right now.

Aghhh! Stop tarring Americans, or any other nationality, with the same brush as their undemocratically elected 'leaders', it's absurd! American Presidents are elected by bloodline, not by the people!

Your mistake is that you are seemingly unable to see through your black glasses. In your hatred you are lumping all hapless |Americans together with that son of a bush.
He may have his acolytes, and your comment about America imperiously demanding support in its war against terrorism has some merit; but you have overstepped the boundary of decent dialogue. I don't see how American |T||E|FLers can be accused of being U.S. citizens.

So tell us what your nationality is and what the leaders of your country have done.

What would you have George Bush do that he hasn't done?

from the news:

"George W. Bush pledged $350 million from the U.S., up from $35 million. American military helicopters and cargo planes have already arrived in the region carrying medical staff and relief supplies."

"Outgoing U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell met with UN Secretary General Kofi Annan at UN headquarters to discuss relief efforts in South Asia."

"Canada has joined a coalition of developed countries delivering relief to tsunami-struck south Asia.

Prime Minister Paul Martin pledged Canada's commitment to the coalition in a telephone conversation early Friday with U.S. President George W. Bush.

The United States initially assembled a four-country coalition with Australia, India and Japan, to co-ordinate humanitarian relief for the devastated region."

Umm I don't think I mentioned US citizens at all. My whole post was about George Bush. I am an Australian and, even though our prime minister makes me cringe, on the whole Australian efforts have been a lot more sustained and benevolent than America's.

So when you said you would be embarrassed to be an American you were not referring to US citizens at all, but to Russians? I suggest you and your pals watch the news. If you honestly believe Australia is donating more resources than the U.S. you ought to have a bath ... or take reading lessons.

Also from the news:

"Australia announced Friday it will provide a further 25 million Australian dollars (US$19.5 million) in financial aid to the tsunami-hit regions of Asia.

"Foreign Minister Alexander Downer said the increase would bring Australia's total financial commitment to A$60 million (US$46.7 million).

"Also on Friday, an Australian naval ship left for Indonesia carrying helicopters and army engineers to help with reconstruction and relief efforts in communities devastated by the massive earthquake and tsunami, the ship's commander said.

"HMAS Kanimbla left Sydney Harbor with two helicopters, about 300 defense personnel and construction equipment _ including bulldozers and diggers _ to help clear debris and begin rebuilding parts of Aceh province. It was expected to reach Sumatra by Jan. 13. "

Anyway, I'm sure most wealthy nations are doing what they can to assist the region. I would hope that we can all overcome our differences in this time of tragedy. I believe that national boundaries are for the most part artificial. Let the world be one. God Bless Australia a member of the US-led coalition.

Are you intentionally being dumb?

I said that Americans would be embarrassed about the actions of their government. It wasn't a criticism of US citizens in general. Just like I am embarrassed by the actions of the Australian government in their handling of illegal immigrants.

And pro rata of GDP I would say that Australia is donating a lot more than America.

what is to be embarrassed about? the USA will give 350 million dollars in aid. that is amazing. what country is sending most of the cargo ships and helicoptors? hmmm....seems that they all say "USA" on them.

what's with all this bush/USA bashing? there are so many reactionaries making themselves look like idiots here. ok, so the USA pledged an intial 15M right off the bat and as the full extent of the tragedy became known, the USA increased it's relief monies accordingly. ....and some of you dig and dig until you can make up a reason why this is bad policy. unbelievable.

mesmerod!

Why are you continuing to post on this forum!?

Reactionaries are politically RIGHT-wing. And they are the folks whom Bush represents who couldn't care less about any other country's problems. Natural disasters make those countries easier to invade--that's the thinking that prevails in the US government.

Fair point, well made but the fact is that Bush was elected democratically this time and with a larger majority than last time so people just have to accept that he now has a legitimate mandate. It's shit but it's true.

If this tsunami had not hit South Asia, and instead had devastated an area from Ireland to Sweden, you can bet Bush would''ve come home from the ranch pronto, gotten on the horn, and we would've had aid planes in the air and flying within an hour of the news!

Sorry to be so craven, but it's partly or mostly racial. No one stepped in to help Rwanda during the slaughter in 94. But we did in the former Yugoslavia....because those were white people.

Henry Kissinger once made the statement that "nothing important ever takes place in the southern hemisphere." That unfortunately is the attitude of many, many in the Republican party.

I am embarrassed to be an American right now. Every day it just gets worse and worse. Mr. Twisting and I have discussed moving out of the country, but it's not feasible for us right now.
