Should I assemble one when I get to Japan? I'm trying to see what goes in one. Do any of you have unconventional suggestions?

Yes! It's a VERY good idea! Japan is rather earthquake-prone, so I would assemble the following as needed or if applicable. I would say that the first 12 items are pretty important...

    - a three-day supply of drinking water (bottled) (I have set aide about 1L per person per day)
    - a three-day supply of food you don't have to refrigerate or cook
    - first aid kit
    - a portable radio (preferably the kind you crank and doesn't need batteries or electricity)
    - blankets
    - a wrench and other basic tools
    - a flashlight
    - work gloves
    - emergency cooking equipment
    - portable lanterns
    - fresh batteries for each piece of equipment
    - clothing
    - rope

As needed:
--------------
    - baby items
    - prescription medications
    - extra car and house keys
    - extra eyeglasses
    - credit cards and cash
    - important documents, including insurance policies.

There may be others but those are the basics.

It is also a good idea to register with the gov't office. If you do and there is an earthquake, I'm told someone will come by and deliver an obento (packed lunch) for you. I requested Pizza Hut, but they wouldn't go for it.
