|

I'm currently based in NYC and desperately wanting to go to South America within the year to teach English. I had decided upon Chile but reading the forums here everyone has all kinds of different opinions. I was wondering if anyone could tell me specifically how difficult it is to go down to Santiago and shop around for a job say in August? I'm 27, will have my CELTA, speak French/Korean/Italian/some Spanish, presentable female, and have been volunteering as an ESL teacher for a year. Gracias. |

August is not the best time to go, but nor is it the worst. Late-Feb is best. |

Hell is a family orientated holiday camp with white fluffy bunnies given as welcome gifts in comparison to santiarsehole. |

not sure about Santiago but I have had the displeasure of working in Temuco to the south.
Temuco is full of the most stupid , in bred morons I have ever come across..
...like .........dor........theres a white person ...lets stare and nudge each other ...
Chile prides itself on being wealthier than most other Sa nations... well perhpas if they realised culture was important as well then maybe all the other SA nations wouldnt hate them so much... |

Ouch. I hate seeing responses like this to such a beautiful country! Santiago, while contaminated, huge, and expensive, isn't as bad as some people put it out to be on this forum. If I got a decent job there, I'd definitely make the move... but I wouldn't move for the sheer pleasure of being in that city. I would say it's "in between" your two choices. Not great but not hell, either.
There's a lot more to Chile than Santiago but unfortunately that is where you will find the most work. I was fortunate enough to steer clear of Santiago and am residing on the coast.
If you do make the move, make sure you come to Chile with $. As a tourist or a traveler, Chile can be pretty cheap... but as a resident, you need a decent-paying job to make ends meet and there aren't too many out there. Good luck! |
