You dont have to, but if you have only one employer they will often do it for you. If you are working for several places part time or you are on a working holiday visa where you can pay up to20% in tax they may take out too much, and by filing a return you can claim a refund.

You have to pay direct taxes, but you are not obliged to file a tax return.

Hello, I also have a tax related situation/question. Please, if anyone can clear this up for me I would appreciate it.

My boss told me that I will be getting some money back from my taxes that were paid for last year's work September-Dec (4 months), this I understand. What I don't understand is that I asked her if I would get money back again next year(2006) for this year's work Jan-Aug (8 months) and she said---probably not. Why wouldn't I?

Thanks in advance.

What visa are you on? If you were on working holiday the first time you would have been paying up to 20% in tax and you get a refund when you file a return. Either that or she took out too much in taxes as you wouldnt be working the full year. They may not take out the same in monthly taxes for a four month period as they do for person working for a year, and the tax filing will refund any arrears or overpayments by your employer.

This time you if you are on a regular work visa you could be paying regular rates. Your employer doesnt know if you get a refund for the taxes you paid on 8 months work until she actually files, as she is not the tax department.

You may get a refund if you have a lot of deductions which reduces your taxable income. Only the tax department knows what the true story will be, and anything your employer says is no more than a guess, in my opinion. If in doubt, file your own tax returns.
