Hi everyone. I'm heading for Taichung mid february and although very excited don't really know what to expect. I'm going to be teaching in a big school in Wur, Taichung County. Do any of you live there, or know where it is? I would love to get in touch and find out about living conditions, friends, life etc. Look forward to your replies. I'm from South Africa by the way. Cheers, Nixbear |

Joy School is a franchise chain of language schools. They have hundreds of franchise schools all over the island. The head office provides the books and curriculum and the individual schools find and employ their own foreign teachers. Their growth in recent years is due to their relatively low franchise fees and the fact that they have bought contracts with several public schools to provide the books and teachers for the new elementary school English classes for public schools.
Be advised it is illegal to work in public schools unless your ARC comes directly from the MOE ( Ministry of Racial Purity ).
You will have to provide an address for specific info on that branch.
Check your PM for more info.
Good luck,
A. |

Correct up to this point. Too bad you didn't stop there!

Untrue. Joy's franchise fees are one of the highest of all of the chain schools. They have always been and they remain so. The reason that owners choose a Joy franchise is that the owner of Joy is an educator herself (professor of English). Joy has an excellent reputation among Chinese people, just ask some of your Chinese friends, and the name sells itself as far as enrolling students. The books are quality publications compared to some schools, and this is another plus for school owners that can recognize the difference.

This too is incorrect.
The supply of English texts to public schools is a very competitive business. Often the local government of a certain area will hold a Shuominghuei to enable all publishers to sell their wares. The way that this works is that the teachers and decision makers come together and each publisher gives a 20 or 30 minute presentation. Often there are strict requirements surrounding these presentations such as only one or two presenters being allowed in the room, presenters are not allowed to see the presentations of other presenters, no gift giving, and in some cases no props or posters. It's a tough business and there is no opportunity there for any one company to 'buy' a decision in their favor.
It is my understanding that Joy has always held a high market share here and this is increasing. This is no doubt due to three reasons:
a. Reputation - Teacher, students, and parents all know the name.
b. Qualifications - As I mentioned earlier the editorial director is a well respected English professor.
c. Quality - It is well recognized that Joy's books are good quality. This has been mentioned on this forum by others before. Quality sells!
