I wanted to ask those who have taught in English in both Korea and Taiwan and how they felt about each. Knowing what you do now, where would you begin your teaching in Asia?
I have narrowed down my choices for where to start teaching and now I have these two places as potential. Please include teaching conditions, schedule, quality of life, cost of living and anything else you would like to share.
Thank you. |

I've only taught in Korea.
I work for a small chain. I make about $1800 after tax for about 4 to 4.5 hours per day.
I make a further $320 per month for 4 hours a week on Saturday, then another $600 per month for 5 hours private tuition per week in my spare time.
I make a further $500 per month for 45 minutes of kindergarten Monday through Friday.
My chain school hours are in a block between 3-8:30. All the other work is illegal.
That's about $3250 net for 35 hours per week and I don't pay rent or bills.
I get next to no vacation, and no flexibility in my legal job. I have no complaints, my employer has honored the contract I signed and for the most part so have I. I've worked worse jobs here, but just like Taiwan you have to be here to land the nicer ones.
I'm moving to Taiwan myself. This is for a variety of reasons, but mostly flexibility with regards to being able to take unpaid vacation. |
