I made a bit of a mistake.

I bought my ticket to Hong Kong on the last day of the Lunar New Year holiday, according to the Korean Seolnal calendar.

Unfortunately, without my knowledge, that translates to the *first* day of the Chinese New Year.

So, I might end up having to get a hotel or whatever, but I was just wondering how closed is Hong Kong during CNY? Is nothing open the first day? Does HK become a ghost town for a week? Would I be able to go to a supermarket or convenience store if need be?

Thanks for your help!

Most stores will close the first one or two days. However, there are enough events for you.

Feb 9-11 are official holidays.
Feb 9 has a parade.
Feb 10 has a firework at 8pm

the fireworks are awesome. A 23 minute long display. The last one they had had 30 000 seperate fireworks being let off.

Don't worry too much, I've NEVER seen a street with closed shops, and I'm pretty sure that places like 7-11 will be open. Even if the majority are closed, you can bet there will be someone with an open shop to capitalize on that

I think the supermarkets are closed for only one day, and the seven elevens are always open. It seems that fewer and fewer shops are closed each year. The fireworks, depending on the weather, cloud cover and pollution, can be really spectacular. It will be really interesting this year to see if the smog that has been hanging over HK for the past nine months will hinder things. One point in favour is that I assume that the factories in Guandong will be closed, so maybe we will be able to breath again.

Ocean Park is open 365 days if you want to see the pair of Pandas.
