I just returned recently from visiting both Hanoi and HCMC and have decided to return soon to HCMC to teach English. Of course there were good and bad points about both places, but here was my overall experience.
Although Hanoi was not very crowded at all compared to HCMC, had cooler climate, and less pollution, yet the people seemed very intimidating to me. They would give me harsh looks and stares almost every place I went. Typically it was the older people who were guilty of this rather than the younger because of their lingering hatred toward Americans. Most of the market owners along the streets weren't the least bit eager for my business and even drove me away a couple of times.
But on the other hand, the people in HCMC were wonderful! In general, they were almost always helpful and pleasant to be around. The heat, humidity, mosquitos, pollution, and traffic were definitely negatives when compared to Hanoi, but the people were what truly made the difference.
I can't wait to return to HCMC and begin teaching! |
