Hi! I am new to the idea of teaching English abroad and would like some advice on teaching in Costa Rica specifically.

I have a Bachlors degree in Psychology and am continuing my education in Spanish (currently at the intermediate level), and so I am especially interested in teaching in a Spanish-speaking country, specifically Central America (Costa Rica, Mexico) or Spain.

Is TEFL/ TESL certification necessary? What programs do you recommend? Is it best to get certified in Costa Rica and then begin working or arrive with the certification? I do not yet have a certification but am having a hard time deciding on what program/ certification is best. I would like to have a certification that is internationally recognized and affordable.

Are jobs plentiful? Which areas are the best to work in?
What is the best way to find a job? Should I look for specific job openings or contact schools directly and inquire about openings? Is it possible to line something up from the US or is it necessary to be in Costa Rica pounding the pavement to find something?

Are there mostly jobs teaching in schools? or on-site businesses? outside tutoring?

What are the working conditions like? i.e. weekly hours? pay? etc.

Is there any assistance in providing housing or helping to find housing? other benefits?

What is the average cost of living?

Is it safe? especially for a young single white female?

Is it legal? I just read another post regarding work visas/ permits and border hopping. This sounds shady to me and I'm concerned about working illegally and having trouble with law enforcement overseas.

Ideally, I would like to be living and teaching abroad by this summer (June/ July/ August) - is this a realistic aim?

I would greatly appreciate any advice you would be willing and able to give! Smile
