I AM CONSIDERING GOING TO INDONESIA AT THE END OF MY CONTRACT IN JUNE
WHAT IS THE STATE OF TELEVISION IN INDONESIA ?
I HAVE SPENT 2 YEARS IN CHINA WATCHING 40 CHANNELS IN EITHER MANDARIN OR CANTONESE.
I HAVE BEEN TO INDONESIA 12 TIMES, SO I AM AWARE THAT SATELLITE TV IS AVAILABLE.
WHAT WOULD THE PRICE BE FOR INSTALLATION ? |

| Cable is quite common in Jakarta. Usual channels - Discovery, MTV, AXN, Naked Kangaroo Channel etc etc - mostly American content, except for Naked Kangaroo, of course, which is an Australian channel. Normal TV (not cable or sat) consists of soap operas, real-life police shows, ghost shows plus loads of other crap that i can't be bothered writing down. It also has imported stuff with Indonesian subtitles. |

In regard to TV services available, I joined up with Telekom's system. It was quite good and gave us a wide range of news and documentary programs, and was reasonably priced. In retrospect, I should have chosen a better plan, which included BBC and Australian ABC, which includes Aussie football!
Another really great thing we did, was to buy a small radio, (in Indonesia) which has a hand-sized parabola at the back, and it picks up more than 30 English language stations via satellite, in stereo, digital format. Everything from BBC news, Jazz, Pop, CNN, Blumberg, 24 hrs a day. The quality was amazing.
Not very expensive, the subscription fee is included in the purchase price, and it can be used anywhere in Asia, as long as you can get a view of the sky.
We bought a Hitachi, with single speaker and stereo outlet. It would be less hassle to get a bigger model with twin speakers.

A world space radio can be bought at many good electrical and radio shops in Asia. I bought mine in Yogyakarta on September 11, 2002. That way I got the 'real' news from CNN and the BBC, and not the local laundered variety.
The cost for a single speaker radio is not big, and it is portable. However, the twin-speaker variety gives you direct stereo without having to go through another radio/tape deck.
These radios have a satellite 'footprint' ranging from China right through Indonesia and India.
You just have to juggle the little parabola around so that it's got an unobstructed view of the sky and the satellite.
Have a look at WRN internet site.
I also bought a board and software that let me connect my computer to a number of channels from the satellite, but it wasn't really worth the effort. That was before I was on the internet at home. |

Hehe nah I'm not biased at all.
Interesting, I didn't know those tv/radio options were available. I'll have to ask you about them next time I go back to live, because I'll forget the details by then, even if I save them somewhere! |
