Hi,
If I get offered a job with Interac, I will be going to Japan by end of March/early April.
I know that they don't pay for your flight, accommodation etc.
How much money do I need to start off?
Would �4000 be enough considering that I would need to wait +/- 4-6 weeks before I get paid?
Any good websites to book cheap flights from Europe (from Amsterdam, London or Brussels)?
Is it always cheaper if I get a return flight ticket?
Is it true that it is cheaper if I buy my travel pass (to travel in Japan) before my date of departure?

Sabine, are you talking about the JR railpass?
You can only buy that if you have a tourist visa, not a work visa. You have to show your passport when you buy the railpass that you have a tourist stamp in your passport. It is meant for tourists travelling cheaply around Japan, not for people who are going to work there.
Not sure what the Euro is nowadays but about 1000 British pounds (US$2000) is recommended for the first month there until you get paid. |

I will just add that on many trains (express trains, can not be used on bullet trains) the conductor will check the tickets and may ask to see your passport if you have a Japan Rail Pass. If you have a working visa or holiday visa stamp you will be asked to pay full fare.
You must be present when you buy the ticket and you can not ask a relative to buy it for you. Its possible the ticket will have your name on it so cheating is probably not possible. |

You will need around 500,000Yen to get by. Maybe less. An appartment will cost you nearly 250,000Y (ist and last month's rent, key money, security deposit etc.) Then you have to live almost 2 months sans salary.
You can do it for less than 500K, depending on the cost of the appartment, and how frugal you are, but this would be comfortable.
