I believe they generally pay $300 per month, but don't take my word for it because I did an internship and only for 10 weeks, so I can't say I know the TEFL scene that well. --$300 would be the salary, and additionally they pay for your housing and transportation, and usually airfare depending on length of contract. The pay really depends on where you teach - a private institue, a private secondary school? There are quite a few places within the capital Ulaanbaatar (elsewhere TEFL opportunities are virtually non-existent, unless you are working for Peace Corps or VSO).

The two most well-known institutes are 1. International House - Ulaanbaatar (aka English for Special Purposes Foundation, more British) and 2. Santis (American-owned). I hear they are the most well-paying in their category and they do have excellent standards (I can vouch for IH at least). You can google their websites for more info (might be somewhat outdated though - but at least you have contact info).

Public is the lowest-paying. General local university English teachers, last I heard, get paid only $80 per month. Even at the private institutes $150 is pretty good for Mongolians.

If you're interested in the culture and language I say go for it! You won't regret it; the Mongolians are just about the most hospitable, easy-going people I've met. Good-natured humor, hardworking, intelligent and open-minded. At least that was my experience. Smile

Anyways, other than these two institutes which actually have maintained websites in English, the rest you may very well need some contacts in Mongolia to help you. It's still a small city and personal connections in many cases is key.

Perhaps others can fill in the gaps where I cannot? Feel free to ask more questions, though. Cheers. Smile

That's a pretty big range. I can't be the only one who would like to know more about this, if you don't mind sharing.

I know it is a huge range, but it is true.
Basically, state schools and universities don't pay much and the conditions tend to be not as good as what most other schools can offer:poor facilities, no textbooks, no tapes or tapeplayers, no materials...
There are exceptions, of course.

Upmarket private schools, on the other hand, do pay a lot but the conditions can also be difficult, for different reasons.
For instance, the students can actually be bored to death spoiled brats whose parents think money can buy everything, including intelligence.
Some of Ulaanbaatar's most expensive schools are actually plagued with such nouveaux riche mentality.

And of course, you have the in-between ones, including private training centres, different kinds of schools, both with davantages and disadvantages.

Something to keep in mind, though, is that it's not just about the money.
You could get paid more than $ 2500, get free accomodation, but would end up teaching English to 3rd and 5th graders who cannot even write and speak their own language and have no clue what you are talking about.

I shall give accurate and updated information about schools and salaries soon.
There are a lot of schools to stay away from:they include Santis which recently changed its name for Inlingua and the American School of Ulaanbaatar.

For the time being, it could be a good idea to check previous posts about Mongolia and Ulaanbaatar, namely some from Malinkyhoy, to have a rough idea about salaries and conditions.

Apart from "classic" schools, there are quite a lot of training centres specialised in TOEFL preparation and it could mean some jobs are available.
One of them which has an excellent reputation is Jet, due to the charisma, competence and experience of its main teacher. Very Happy
However, if most learners know that TOEFL is the magic sesame to working or studying abroad, few of them seem to be aware of the necessary efforts that TOEFL preparation implies, not to mention the fact that some people start worrying about improving their level of English at the very last moment, a few months or sometimes just weeks before the exam! I was going to post a reply to this thread, but then I noticed it originally went up almost four years ago.
