Whatever happened to the story about deranged xenophobic Chiinese attacking foreigners in Shanghai market with HIV-positive hypodermics ? Haven't seen that one for a while !!!!!
At least here in Saudi it is real Islamists going round with guns killing real westerners. |

I remember a lengthy series of postings on the old forum. Some of the more hysterical would not hear any suggestions that the whole story was an urban myth. I suppose the paranoid now have something to be paranoid about so do not need to believe the stories about deranged hypodermic-wielding xenophobes targetting Americasn. |

That reminds me:
The young lady i met said she was being very careful now and taking precautions.
She said she would hate to get AIDS again. |

I remember the syringe rumor - my wife tried to stop me going anywhere, and students would keep telling me to "be careful". Just like now actually. It's a great rumor city. SARS stories can be traced back to a hospital cleaner who lives in the same building as the informant's cousin. Students in class on Friday were giving a very wide berth to an otherwise popular, vivacious girl. One whispered to me "that girl comes from the same district as the SARS patient who died". I made a point of sitting next to her and checking her essay. Note though, THE patient. Shanghai stats:
- chances of dying from SARS 1 in 16 million.
-chances of contracting it 1 in 2 million
-chances of being a suspected case 1 in 1 million.
Of the confirmed cases though, 2 are [officially] Americans. |
