Yes, but he did not start war to prevent another one. Truman did use atomic weapons, and there is debate over whether using them would have actually saved more American lives. Many thought the Japanese were near surrender. Read Iris Chang's The Rape of Nanking and you'll discover how brutal Imperial Japanese militarism was.

After their surrender, they claimed ignorance and extolled classics like "I was only doing what I was told." That is malarkey and here's why. In 1937, the Japanese raped, tortured, and murdered over 300,000 Chinese in Nanjing (ie Iris Chang) in only a matter of weeks - eclisping the total casualties inflicted by both blasts in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. They routinely and systematically tortured and mutilated the Chinese, particularly women's gentials, and even engaged in contests to see who could behead 100 Chinese the fastest. Evidence suggests that thousands were buried alive and many others were used for bayonet practice. Women were tied down and ganged raped, often by 20 or 30 men. This suggests not an anomalous instance of humanity at its worst, but an ethos of Japanese aggression justified by a perceived cultural and racial superiority.

In the Phillipines, the Japanese held prisoner nearly 150,000 white POWS, mostly American, and embarked on the infamous Bataan Death March. 40,000 - 50,000 died of systematic food deprivation, beatings, and beheadings. This kind of wanton aggression ran deep in Japanese society, and was viewed as a source of pride. In fact, those Japanese who could not serve in the military were pushed to the margins of society, and those who came back alive often killed themselves because of the humiliating treatment they received from Japanese civilians.

This was 60 years ago and leadership has changed and the country has democratised. But, the Japanese are still, in many ways, xenophobic and rarely grant asylum to political refugees. The Justice Ministry has granted only 30 of 803 in the last 17 years. Also, elements in the LDP and military want to remilitarise and are using the North Korean threat as a justification for nuclearization.

I have difficulty forgiving the Japanese.

Now, as to my question, can anyone help me??

That was in response to Minhang Oz's reply about Truman dropping atomic bombs. Apparently he scrapped it or something.

Just buy one when you get to China... don't worry about getting one before you leave. Just don't forget to use it before you plug something in... that is how my VCR got fried.
