I have been offered a parttime course at a strategy consulting company to develop and present a business communications course which is 28 hours in length.

Before anyone says it, yes my other employer is fine with extra work.

We agreed on a price of 180RMB/hour.

I have realised that the amount of development work for this is quite high. I would say somewhere between 50-60 hours extra which they require Powerpoint slides.

Another FT said that course development work usually is separate contract. Should I take on this extra work or ask for more money or develop an extra contract?

I'd try to geeither more money based on what you project will be the total amount of hours needed for the entire project. If you do 80 hours of work, get paid for each hour. Your chinese employer may lower the hourly rate paid. However, since he won't actually see you doing the work on slides and so forth, as opposed to teaching in front of a class, he will tend to think of it as not really being something he should pay for.

The best thing is to get a seperate contract for a fixed amount for the course development work. 50 or 60 hours at 120 or 130 rmb works out to a flat payment of 6000 or so RMB. Try to get copyright and credit on any publication ..

Thanks Norman, that is along the lines I was thinking about.

Other collegues suggest that curriculm work should be separate and charged at a completed version system they can use for the future. After this they won't get charged for the extra course development as it's already done.

I was thinking about 5,000RMB flat but 6,000RMB sounds better. Very Happy Very Happy

At the end of the day I am not worried if I do this or not as this will put me in the extremely busy/no time category.

I spent several years as a curriculum developer for large company and did consulting as well.

Our rule of thumb for estimating curriculum development was three hours development for each hour of delivery when developing standard, podium-based instruction (including powerpoint).

For CBT (Computer Based Training), it ranged from 40 to 100 hours development per each hour of instruction.

We used ISD (Instructional Systems Design) methodology, which is perhaps more formal than many might choose, but that was the customer requirement.

This entirely excludes the actual instruction time.

Standard disclaimer; your mileage may vary.

Hello KES, thanks for the tip. I was thinking around 2 hours for every one but then I have to revise my timings.

Any extra comments and helpful hints would be VERY APPRECIATED as I have not done this before.
