I went to Green Island a few years ago. We took a ferry from Taidong. It wasn't a long ride, but it was memorable. The first third of the trip was really fun. People were looking out the windows at dolphins and enjoying the ride. The second third consisted of 70% of the people puking into the small clear plastic bags we had been provided with. It smelled nasty. People were waking up from naps in sudden fits, fumbling for their baggies with one hand as they unsuccessfully tried to stem the flow of puke with the other. (Try using your hand to stop the flow of water from a bathtub faucet if you want an idea of what *that* looks like.) I was super nauseous and close to puking, and my immature Taiwanese friend (29 years old) kept trying to take my picture. At one point I looked up from my seat and saw this woman partially asleep, swaying back and forth above me, leaning against the back of my chair with a nearly full clear bag of puke loosely dangling in her hand. Her mouth was all watery like she was going to let loose again, and I knew that if I didn't move, that bag of puke was going to slip from her hand right down the back of my shirt. It was gross. I don't remember the last third of the trip, but upon arrival, all I could think about was that I was stranded cause I seriously did not want to go back via boat.
Oddly enough, the ride back was totally calm and uneventful. And Green Island was fun. I think they have hotsprings that are filled with water from the ocean. When we were there, high tide came in at 2:00am, and the springs were packed. The next afternoon the tide was out and they were almost completely empty of water and people. I think that was Green Island. |

I think the ferry is a fine way to get there. I'm pretty sure I just went there on a bad day. Like I said, the ride back was smooth.
As far as places to stay goes, I can't really help you. We had a nice place, but I went with friends of friends, and they had made all the arrangements. Check out a travel guide on Taiwan for info on places and prices. The islands are used to having tourists, so there should be a decent amount of places to choose from.
I had a lot of fun visiting the islands off of Taiwan. Penghu was another fun one. Hope this helps you decide! |

Monk makes a very good point about not taking the ferry if you are prone to motion sickness. Other than that the ferry is less expensive and much more enjoyable. You can book a plane ticket through any local travel agent.

Getting there:
By sea: Take the ferry from Fukang Port. You can also choose to take the hovercraft which makes three trips to the island daily.
By air: Taiwan Airline and Formosa Airlines offer domestic flights daily to the island.
On the island: The bus depot is in Nanliao. There are buses and cap services (near the airport or pier) on the island. |
Good luck,
A. |
