Hi all,
Managed to have my wallet nicked yesterday whilst crossing into Cambodia at Poipet.
It's never happened to me before and I guess I was far too laid back and complacent.
Please be very careful when you cross into Cambodia at this point. Swarms of kids, outstretched hands and desperate faces can distract you and leave you vulnerable. Put important stuff in zipped up pockets. Don't be flashy (like me, bloody nice watch, ipod earphones etc on full display!) and keep your bag bouncing around in front of you, not slung over your shoulder where it can be accessed easily.
Incidently, after me and my mates made a fuss over it, demanding that the police do SOMETHING, my wallet turned up at the police station, minus 4000 baht (I know, I know), but with everything else intact.
Dodgy aint the word.... |

Hi Nickyboy:
Yeah, that really bites.
If it makes you feel any better, I left 9,000 Baht (in my wallet) on the back seat of a taxi while trying to explain to the driver where the hell I was going. After giving up on the explanation (the driver didn't speak any English) I jumped out of the taxi without the wallet. By the time I realized that my wallet was still on the back seat, he was long gone.
Hard & expensive lessons, but good to pass on to others nonetheless. |

Well at least you got your wallet back (minus cash), it is sure a pain to replace everything in a wallet and to cancel credit cards, etc.
I once lost my wallet on a bus in Japan. I didn't even know I lost it. Then the police called all the hotels in town to find out if foreigners had lost a wallet, not big town, but a semi-popular tourist stop in the mountains. I was staying at a temple/hostel and a monk drove me down the mountain to a police station, wallet and money intact. Very nice!
I always keep my wallet in my front pocket and in crowded dodgy areas, I keep my hand in my pocket. |

Left my fav camera of 10 years in the back of a cab in Tokyo. Imagine all of the cabs in Tokyo! I told the cops, they asked me what colour the taxi was- I was so out of it I hadn't paid attention. Oh well!

I'm amazed the wallet was found. Don't feel like the Lone Ranger. Ask 10 different teachers and 9 of them will have had something nabbed and the other one is probably just embarassed because when they got taken they were someplace they don't want to admit. |

There should be a support group in Thailand for people who have been ripped off since it's so common |

The government and TAT are doing something about it though.
They have organised a Conference of ripped off tourists to be held at Impact Arena, 18:00, April 1st 2005. Fee 500B for tourists, 20B for thais. |

Yeah, I know it was DOH! of me, but it's never happened before and I'm a confident young chap that firmly believes that people who worry too much end up being the victim....
