Hello everyone,
This is my first post. I've been viewing this forum for a few months now, so I thought I should join in. I'm making final preparations for my departure to Japan in a few weeks and I've found this forum extremely helpful in answering questions I've had.
I recently read something on reentry permits and I was confused. I hope someone can clear up my confusion. I understand once you arrive in Japan on a work visa and then you decide to travel outside the country, you will need a reentry permit in order to return to Japan. My question has to do with the multiple entry permit. Is this linked to your current work visa? If you renew your work visa for a 2nd, 3rd, 4th, etc. time, will the initial multiple reentry permit still be valid or will you have to purchase additional permits (single or multilpe) with each renewal of the visa?
This is just a general question. I'm not coming to Japan just to travel and do some work on the side. That's not my plan. My main focus is to work, but when I read a recent post (it's one of the stickies), the wording just got me thinking and I thought I would inquire.
Any feedback to clear up my confusion would be appreciated.

I believe the multiple reentry permit is good until your current visa expires. |

Yes, in the case of permanent residency holders, it's 3 years from date of issue. |

For work visa holders:
Any Reentry permits are good until your visa expires.
Single reentry permits are good for one trip abroad that is stated on the application for said permit.
The Multi-Rentry permits are limited to one year's time of usage. In otherwords, you can re-enter multiple times within that year.
Hope that clears things up. |

Hey:
My visa (being on JET) is good for 3 years so that is how long the re-entry permit is good for...that being said, it is the biggest slap in the face I have had since I have been here...it is really nothing more than a way to extort 6000 Yen from you for nothing ...it really is not even a permit...more like a stamp they just put in your passport...it is not like it informs immigration anything that your visa, passport, and Gaijin Card does not already tell them...still, no way round it so just suck it up and get it...hope this helps... |

Yeah true, it's definitely a gaijin tax. |
