I am a television documentary-maker and ex-ESL teacher researching a documentary about western foreigners teaching English in Japan. Part of my research is finding out what documentaries have been done before. Does anyone know of any documentaries that have been done on this topic? I am also looking for any documentaries on similar topics. ie. Western Foreigners in Japan, ESL teachers in other countries, etc etc.
English OR Japanese docs.

About a year or two ago there was a documentary on Western Hostesses in Japan. I believed it aired on cbc newsworld, but I'm not positive.
It was pretty good actually and showed the seedy underbelly of Japan as well as some positive stuff. |

No idea about particular programs but there have been programs on recently about foreign sumo wrestlers from Hawaii who made it to the top levels of sumo- Konishiki and Akebono.
Both have since retired but there have been programs on about their entry into the sport and their rise through the ranks. Konishiki, who weighs about 250 kg, is now a TV celebrity in Japan and has a charitable foundation that sends underprivileged Hawaiian kids to Tokyo Disneyland etc.
there was also a program on about Dave Spector, who is an American fluent in Japanese and is a TV producer and TV talent here. |
