I am a recent college grad with a BA in Political Science/International Relations with an emphasis in Middle Eastern studies from the University of California, San Diego. Will prospective employers acknowledge this as an asset when applying for jobs overseas? |

For conversation schools and most mainstream schools (with experience teaching first) in Japan, or on the JET programme, no. |

If you are going for jobs in the Middle East, then it might give you a leg up. |

You got a B.A.
YOU'RE IN
This is TEFL not Microsoft! Less is more! More is less!
Can you speak in front of people?
Can you ad lib?
Do you know the difference between a noun clause and an adverbial clause? (Wait a minute, I don't know that one).
Do you know the difference between a noun and an adverb? (Ah this one I know).
Do you like telling people what to do?
Do you like pretending to be someone you're not? like aaaa teacher?
Do you believe that one's career should be horizontally mobile?
Do you believe that one's career should be downwardly mobile?
Do you believe that one's career should be at least directionless?
Do you believe that alcohol improves students' pronunciation?
If you answered yes to the above questions, you have a brilliant TEFL career ahead of you. |

I suspect most employers hiring EFL teachers would see it as neither an asset nor a liability. |

As someone who hires teachers here in Mexico city, I would see it as an asset...certainly not a liability. |

What about a completely irrelevant degree? Like a B.S. in wildlife and fisheries management...? (I will have a TEFL certificate in addition to this, and intend to teach in eastern/central Europe.) |

I have a B.Sc. in Computer Science, and I teach English at a university. YMMV... |
