In many Masters' programmes in TESOL and Applied Linguistics, one is often permitted to do units or courses offered in other programmes.
I'm currently enrolled in UNE's MA (Applied Linguistics) programme. Last year, I was given permission to enrol in a unit entitled "Culture Contact and Hybridity in the Arts of Asia".This unit dealt with how Japanese fine arts, literature, drama and cinema were affected by contact with the West. In subsequent years, other Asian societies will be examined. I found such a unit to be far more interesting than the usual run-of-the-mill TESOL/Applied Linguistics units.
For this year, I am hoping to do a couple of units offered by Macquarie University, in areas relating to English for Specific Purposes. Many units offered in degree programmes are often of little use or interest for many students. Before enrolling in any programme, enquire as to the possibility of enrolling in units offered by other departments - or, even, other insitutions. For those who wish to teach adults, it might be a good idea to look out for units provided by the Faculty of Education, such as in curriculum planning or adult learning/teaching processes.
