Hi there, I posted an inquiry about teaching in this part of the world on the General Asia forum and received a suggestion of Hong Kong. So, here I am. Well, on this board, anyway... I'm a CELTA-qualified British teacher, with a non-education degree, and six years of experience, looking to teach in further education in Asia (whether that be a polytechnic or university, or what-have-you). Does that sound feasible to you?
Id also really like to find out how easy it would be for me to visit the mainland and other nearby Asian countries, in terms of visas, and in terms of the salary I could earn (I don't think anyone gets into teaching for the cash, but I'm hoping to do a Masters soon, and that's part of my motivation from moving from Spain, where I currently work). As an aside, what are typical salaries and hours of work in this part of the world?
Finally, I have some good Chinese friends (from Ning Bo and Tienjin, my apologies for spelling) who've suggested that drinking plays an important part of Asian culture, and I was curious about whether that's true. I don't want to cause anyone I work with a loss of face, but I don't drink (yet I play rugby -- incredible!).
If anybody can help me at all, I'd be really appreciative! Thanks! |

Well let's stat with drinking. In Japan it is a custom for co-workers to socialise outside of the work enviroment, as for HK, not too many teachers have time to get together and erm drink.
With regards to Asia and visas, that is a large question with many different answers depnding n the country. The forums on Dave's will give a lot of answers. |

I don't think drinking plays an important part of HK culture either. |
