Hello
I remember hearing that employers must pay for health insurance in Japan, and that it covers 70% of most medical expenses. Is that correct? Would anyone recommend additional insurance? I'm planning on getting travellers insurance for the beginning of my time in Japan and was wondering if I should just purchase a years worth. Will my husband who is coming on a dependent's visa also be covered?
I also wanted to thank everyone for all the information I've gotten from this forum. I've been searching the posts for info and it's been a goldmine.
Thanks! |

Employers do not pay for health insurance (though they are supposed to) but if you go on national health insurance the monthly premiums are cheap in the first year, and you pay 30% of the bill when you go to the doctor. Spouses can be covered on national health insurance on the same policy.
Be advised that national health premiums become very expensive in the second year if you stay in Japan and sometimes it can be hard to get off it once you have started paying into it as its paid through the city office. For more info check out the stickies at the top of this forum. |

I hope you mean "many employers" do not pay for health insurance. She is obviously referring to shakai hoken and there are schools that do pay this. At some you must request it - Nova, YMCA. Others like the school I work in, it is mandatory. |
