Greetings:
This summer, I will be living in Dhahran for July and August. I will have a lot of time on my hands in the weekday afternoon and evenings and especially on weekends therefore I am considering getting some part-time employment. However, I do have some questions concerning doing this. They are:

a) Does anyone know the situation concerning part-time jobs in Saudi Arabia? Is it illegal to have a part-time job outside your regular job (by the way, I am a teacher in a government institution). Next, even if illegal, does any expat in the Kingdom care or do they make all of the money on the side they can? Some advice on this would be greatly appreciated.

b) Assuming I won't go to jail for working part-time this summer, does anyone know any good places to work part-time in the Al-Khobar-Dhahran-Dammam area? Any decent employers looking for summer part-timers that anyone can recommend? Finally, in my humble opinion, a good rate of pay is 150 rial a hour but I stand to be corrected if it is higher or lower in the Al Al-Khobar-Dhahran-Dammam area? Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Anyone with some answers or perhaps even some questions can write me at [email protected]

Thank you !!

Dear Sigmuu,
If you're working for the government, it will be illegal ( against your contract ) for you to work part or full time for anyone else. However, it's done fairly often. I suspect that the Saudis may " turn a blind eye " towards it if they want to keep you on. But it can be a great excuse for firing you if they want to see you leave. Sorry I can't help you with specific suggrestions for that area, but the private franchise operations ( ELS, etc. ) often hire part-time teachers.
Regards,
John

It would be illegal. Technically you can only work for your sponsor.

ELS might have something. British Council ditto. There are other schools but not sure

100 riyals an hour or less is not unusual. That was the rate 15 years ago !

Most people are on holidays during this period so it might be more difficult to find p/t work.
Personally i wouldn''t come to Saudi at the moment as the situation is not stable.

There might be some private tutoring you can do.... but from experience I would stay away from ELS- go to the job journals for more on that. Other teachers I have worked with tutored privately, just be firm about payment was all they had to say.

Dear mehajaby,
Agreed - tutoring would be preferable to the franchises. The problem is - you usually have to be in a place for a while to make the necessary contacts to pick up those private tutoring jobs. And since Sigmuu's only going to be there for a couple of months, I doubt he'd have enough time to establish those contacts.

John

Thanks, didnt pay attention to the fact he was only going to be there a few months. British council would be a possibility then, but I know they have strcit hours you must work, all evenings as far as I remember them telling me. You must also have a degree of some kind. They pay SR100 an hour for thier teachers.

If there is anyone he knows at Aramco, they have a message board on the intranet. They usually have some ads for people looking for english teachers. There is also a bulletin board at the PAnda aziziyah souk ( a grocery store type mall) where I have ssen many ads for tutors and such....

Well thats about all I can think of, good luck!

100 an hour. Scandalous really - that is what they were paying 10 or 12 years ago.

If you take private students ask for the money up front. I never do privates in Saudi because of the problems and/or unpleasantness about getting the money. At least if you are with the Council or ELS or another school there is a pretty good chence you will get paid - even if it is technically illegal.
