the company that i am looking forward to working for wants me to pay 180 US for work visa" administrative" fees. the fee is then refundable during completion of contract..
i cant see this fee being liable to the employee. im sure its a write off all together..

$180 is nearly 18,000 yen.

It doesnt cost anything for an employer to sponsor a visa from immigration and certainly not that much. If that was the case NOVA would be spending a nearly three-quarters of a million dollars to get visas for its 4000 foreign employees.

Its just a way of getting you to complete your contract by dangling a carrot in front of you. Create a sense of loss and you won't quit on them as you would lose money.

It is illegal and if reported it to immigration and the company would lose its ability to sponsor visas.

But here is another porblem. If you confront the company, they may end up not hiring you or firing you later. Eitherway, this is dirty.

Just curious:

How many other things do they have you paying for on your contract?

Penalties? Fines? If they are ripping off employees with illegal charges you can bet they are doing it somewhere else too, as no one will kick up a fuss in order to get a job with them.
