I know a few of you have sent letters home during your stay in China. Could you possibly share the cost of the postage?
I want to send a letter to the UK, but I have been asked to pay over 200 yuan. This is a simple letter containing just 1 sheet of paper. It sounds a little extreme to me, I was expecting something closer to 30 yuan. |

I suppose you were referring to somekind of registered, or express service, because your first class letter, sent by international air mail, should cost only about 6 RMB, if my experience is any guide, and typically takes about ten days to get there (your experience may vary).

Not sure how much I paid last time, but 200 kuai is WAAAAAY over the top. There must have been some miscommunication!
I would expect to pay around 3 to 5 kuai, and for registration, count on another 15 to 20 kuai.
I post most of my mail from Hong Kong, where a 20 gramme letter costs HK$ 3. Registration is, I believe, 18.
If you are not satisfied with the answer given by staff at one post office, go to another one. To be on the absolutely safe side of the divide between crazy and acceptable go to an upmarket hotel and ask at the business centre, or in their post office (some, like the Garden Hotel and the China Hotel in Guangzhou have their own post office branches in-house). |

Thanks guys.
The 200+ is not a price I have had from a post office, it's from some people in another city. I can't help but feel they are trying to make some quick money. If this is the case then I am less than satisfied. |

I posted a few letters in Wuhan, single sheet of paper. a few yuan.
Just don't sniff the glue that they provide in the post office it'll make you puke. |
