Hey all,

I was just wondering how to call home the cheapest. I have a cell phone, and I've been using the If cards. The time on those cards just melts away though. Yes, I'm a talker.

Laughing <--- This is me on the phone!

I suppose you don't have a computer yet. I use the audio/video conferencing options on msn messanger to talk to people back home. Hey, they can even see me while we chat. The bandwidth isn't the greatest on msn, there's a little lag and you have to plan to be online at the same time, but it's free (of course, you need internet service which isn't free)! Appart from that, a land line is way cheaper than cell phone calling cards. I originally got my land line phone specifically for the long distance. You can also get prepaid cards for payphones. Not sure how they compare to groundlines and cellphone calling cards.

An "eefu" Card? Really? I've always wondered about those things. How long do they last with "normal conversation," whatever that is? Can you send text messages with them?

As for myself, I just had a local help me sign up for the Zhonghua Telecom deal and whenever I feel the [rare] need to phone home, I just dial 009 plus the number. For a while, I was using the 005 prefix, which touts itself as being cheaper but vowed NEVER AGAIN after they started spamming me with text messages.

Go to 7-Eleven or any other convenience store and ask for an international phone card (guoji dianhua ka). There are a number of different brands. You can then call a toll free number, punch in a code and call overseas at cheap prices. I think you need to call from a fixed line rather than a mobile though. They work on payphones without the need to put money or a card in.

Try this,
http://www.skype.com/
P2P telephone service. All you need is broadband internet access. You can even use the internet cafe's computers because all you need to do is open an account, down load the software, plug in the mic and some speakers.
Good luck,
A.
