Hey guys.... I am just wondering... Have worked in China for a year, thinking about going to Taiwan because I hear the pay is much better. I have heard its quite easy to teach in Taiwan without a degree.. just having a little bit of a hard time finding the information about how to get a visa to go over there. Can someone please explain or direct me to some information about teaching over there without a degree or with a tourist visa? Is it possible or common? thanks!!

I am not sure where you heard this, but I wouldn't agree with it.

As you are no doubt aware, what you are suggesting constitutes illegal work. Over recent years the government has been slowly but surely moving in the direction of solidfying the working situation involving foreign teachers teaching English in Taiwan. As a result, many of the previous advantages of working illegally no longer exist.

There are now also plenty of teachers here who qualify for legal employment which would make it just that little bit more difficult for illegal teachers to secure work of their preference. The result is that those working illegally are now being pushed toward the fringes of the industry such that they are forced to work at the schools that no one else wants, the illegal schools that can't legally employ teachers, or the jobs that involve a few hours here and then a few hours at another school. Overall, it is getting harder and harder for illegal teachers to make any decent money.

It is true that teachers in Taiwan make more than teachers on the mainland. The average job on the mainland probably pays about RMB5,000 per month which is about NTD24,000. The average job in Taiwan pays NTD55-60,000 per month. The cost is living is higher, but only marginally so, but then again the quality of living here is far higher than on the mainland. I speak from experience in this regard.

My advice is that you get a degree before you come to Taiwan. I am not talking about a fake certificate, but a real degree. This is the only way to ensure that you can stay here long term and earn the money that you indicated in your post was of interest to you. If this is not feasible then you might be best to remain on the mainland, as at least there you can pretty certain that you will have an income. The same can't be said for you if you were in Taiwan.

Hi,

I've know illiterate blokes make a 100000 NT a month and people with a Masters struggle to pay their hostel rent. It is getting harder though for people without a degree and its not like Thailand, they do raid schools and they will arrest and deport you no problem at all.
The very best site relating to Taiwan is TEALIT .com(Teaching english and living in Taiwan) and you should spend time surfing this one. It will tell you everything you need to know and more.

Best of luck

This used to be true, but that site is out of date now.

A far more informative site is www.buxiban.com and it has up to date information about most of what you need to know about living in Taiwan as a teacher.

There recent Taiwan government infighting over control of the lucrative ESL industry on Taiwan have greatly increased the irony mentioned above.
Many kindergartens now will not hire legal teachers under any circumstances. Basically they don't want anyone with their name on the books as a foreign teacher on Taiwan.
You could have a PhD in education, open work permit , speak and teach fluent Chinese. If you do not look like you are of the Chinese race, you can not legally teach ESL to Early Childhood Students on Taiwan.
Racist government policies are a fact of life for everyone on Taiwan and the local population of Taiwan is too ignorant to realize the problem.
Thus illiterate teachers working in Kindergartens are making a much better living than professional teachers with outstanding credentials working in public schools. However teachers of both Kindergartens and public schools are illegal. The differenc being that the MOE officials get a bigger cut of public school teachers salaries than the do of kindergarten teachers.
The Taiwan Ministry of Education's first priority is enriching themselves through mis appropriation and graft not educating the students of Taiwan in a manner that will prepare them for their future.
Welcome to Taiwan!
A.
