Hi there you all

Just got an e-mail today that my new contract has been cancelled! I was to start on Hainan Island in July, but they informed me that the 'powers that are' have told them they can't hire any foreigh teachers from mainland China?!?!?!
Interesting don't you think? Anybody have similar experiences?

Andre

This had to be expected - schools in Hong Kong were closed for up to 6 weeks (and opened again today, some will reopen in the next few days).

I have heard that training centres are seriously underperforming now with people being on their nerves' ends and panicking when confronted with fellow human beings in the same room!
If you are currently outside of China, feel glad! Some of us are under quarantine or curfew. There are road blocks where they check your body temperature, some villagers have gone berserk because they don't want folks from supposedly-SARS stricken areas to stray into their areas.

Yep, my two sons are teaching in Dalian and they stopped teaching on the 25th of Arpil and have been told that they may only start teaching again at the end of May, MAYBE.
Great for them as they can now just chill and play PS2 from a.m to p.m.
Luckily they are still on full pay but they have been told that they will have to make up the hours lost when school resumes! Not quite sure how that will work as there are only so many hours in a week........
On my home front they have also gone beserk with the roadblock 'thing.' They actually dumped several tons of dirt smack bang in the middle of the road leading to my University and the students have been told they may not stray too far from the University. We, as teachers can still come and go as we please(as well as the men in black), kinda stupid if you ask me, they assume that we are immune to the little 'corona virus'
Of course the local taxi drivers were quick to find alternative routes tru the corn fields, so if you want to go to the nearest town, it is still possible.
Amusing to see that some enterprising farmer has put up a pole across the road tru his corn fields and is charging two bucks to let the cars tru!
Very Happy All this in an area where "fei dian" is nowhere to be seen for 100's of kilometres
Classes here still as normal, although they stink like vinigar.
