Can anyone tell me about this school? A friend of mine is looking at working for this school but wants to know something about it! The owner is not forthcoming with allowing her to speak to current teachers!

Often that's a sign that things are not well! But as I've never heard anyhting abut the school I won't pass judgement.
What about the contract? Has your friend seen a copy? Any strange clauses in it? |

I'm not suprised they are not willing to allow you to speak to other teachers. Don't let them "choose" who you can speak to either. Ask for a list of teachers and contacts and then pick.
The fact that they won't let you speak with them indicates a few things. One that they don't feel confidant that the teachers would recommend them. Two that they would have such a low level of ethics to pull this.
I've seen their ads throughout the year every year. They are a small school and that they would have to post so regularly indicates problems unto itself.
But another interesting point is that they require a few things of the teachers(DL for one if memory serves) yet the pay is comparable to that of schools who do not require other things.
In my opinion, you (or your friend I should say...) can do better... especially if they have experience enough in Japan to have a DL.. |

I don't know anything about this school and by not letting your friend talk to the current teachers they may well have something to hide. If they are always advertising as Bearcat says then perhaps they do go through staff quickly. However, Bearcat also says that it is a small school and, if this is the case, they may just not want you to speak to their teachers because they have made a mistake and hired a real whiner! There are lots of complainers in Japan (some with legitimate complaints, some without)and perhaps the school has hired someone who they know will badmouth them. Yes, if that is the case they shouldn't have hired that person, and yes, if there are lots of teachers they should be able to put you in touch with at least one or two of them, but it is not always the case that the school is bad because it doesn't want you to contact the other teachers. If they have only one or two teachers, perhaps they just made a bad decision when hiring last time. Sometimes these things happen.
If the staff turnover rate is very high, however, and they have several teachers but won't make any of them available, then I think that's probably a bit of a warning. |

I spoke with my friend just a few minutes ago and she said that there was no mention of a contract. (She is not saying that there is no contract but nothing has been mentioned yet!)
After reading through the responses, it does make sense to maybe give the school a bit of a miss. I understand to a degree why some schools don't like you speaking to the current teachers if there is animosity there however, why there is animosity and why can't an applicant at least speak to a former teacher mmmmmm, just a bit of a worry! |
