The main bulk of classes I have for the upcoming semester are titled "drama literature for English majors". Of coarse, being China, I don't have any books or materials to go along with this class, only the internet and a printer. I have spent many an hour looking for plays online. A little difficult to find them at first, but the more daunting task is to find plays at the student's level. They are English majors, so their understanding is, well, you know better than the majority of other students, but still.... I only plan to spend about 50% of the class using plays, the rest will be a mixture of activities, lecture, discussion, and some writing. I still need some plays however. Anyone have any ideas on suitable plays or websites?

This question has cropped up several times, and my standard reply has always been: go for Harold Pinker. Modern, actually contemporary, reflective of society, easy (relatively speaking) to relate to and understand; you might benefit from daapting his pieces a bit to CHina's social issues.
Problem is: where can you get his works? You might have to visit Hong Kong. Some pointed out a couple of websites, but I can't remember.

There are some good drama links at http://www.caryn.com/acting/caryn-acting-scenes.html if you scroll down the page. One I've used is http://www.online-literature.com/george_bernard_shaw/pygmalion/ for Shaw's Pygmalion. Another good one is http://drama.eserver.org/

Many of my students this year found it very difficult to follow what the words meant in Act II of Pygmalion. I ended up having to do a lot of explaining. The problem you face is that the English used in the 80+ year old works that are now in the public domain is often antiquated and even modern drama can contain a lot of obscure cultural references. But maybe you can find something simple and interesting if you read through all that's available online.

I think Roger meant to write Pinter, not Pinker. http://www.haroldpinter.org/home/index.shtml

Some movies closely follow the original plays.
If not, then the students can still benefit from a comparison.

See:

www.filmsite.org

"Who's Afraid of Virginia Wolff?" seems to resonate relevant to current US Foreign Affairs.

I don't know how you can avoid not dealing, at some point, with Shakespeare. I would think that would be a necessity in a "drama literature" course.

You might check out the above url. Using drama in the ESL classroom is a lot of fun. Do a Google search on using drama in the classroom then adapt to your classroom.

I did a powerpoint presentation on using drama in the ESL classroom. I'll try to post it for you.

Enjoy! Wink
