Is it rude to use your cell phone while walking on the street? What is appropriate cell phone behavior in a store? When is it best to just turn the ringer off (other than the obvious situations such as being at work, watching a movie, dining out...)? |

Keep your voice down wherever you use the cell phone. Unfortunately, the law was just changed here to permit people to use cell phones on public transportation, as long as they don't use it near people in the silver seats.
It is also illegal to use your cell phone while driving.
I'd also keep the ringer off in a library.
Check with your school to see its own policies. |

Can't see why you can't use the phone on the street. You have to talk somewhere. Just be a little unobtrusive and use common sense. I don't take my phone to class, you need to set an example. |

I don't pay attention to it unless I'm on the train. It's hold over from when I was back home when I didn't want people over hearing what I was saying on the bus/train. I'll talk anywhere, I have no qualms about talking in the street. I find it odd with some Japanese though who have unbeliveably annoying/loud ringtones (the Kill Bill one annoys me the most). When their phones go off on the train they act all shocked and scandalised - never fails to amaze me. It's not a big thing to put silent vibration on. |
