Could any of the more seasoned teachers give me some practical advice on teaching larger classes? I landed a job in China teaching at a university and the classes are apparently 30-40 students in size. I understand this is normal for China, but I would appreciate any suggestions on what approaches are most effective in teaching classes such as this...
Thanks |

Read books by Penny Ur. They were written to provide exercise ideas for larger groups.
Pair work is essential in my opinion. So is working in small groups.
Info gap exercises, surveys, board games are good.
Correcting each other's written work is an idea. |

In this situation I usually ask myself these questions:
What subject are you teaching?
Have they provided you with a course description?
What are the objectives of the course?
How many weeks does the term last?
What can be realistically accomplished during that period of time?
Do they have a text they want you to use?
If not, have you chosen a text?
What tasks/projects have you chosen for the students to complete during the term?
Do you have to give a mid-term or final exam?
On what criteria are the grades based [projects, written/oral exams, attendence, etc.]?
A lot depends on the answer to the first question [What's the subject?]
If you can provide us with more info we can make more specific suggestions. |
