Hello fellow teachers. I am an American working in a horrible city in China. I have been offered a position in Thailand via internet..Sarasas Bangbuathong. Does anyone have any information on this school. I looked up everything I could, I couldn't find pics of the city and really no helpful info. I was trying to find out if it is an ok place to work..Administration, students, area, and anything you can think of. I have been to Thailand once, but in Bangkok and Pattaya. Please help. Thanks everyone! |

Been there.
Bangbuathong is in Nonthaburi, which is basically a suburb of Bangkok. There's nothing there of any interest. I'd guess it might take you an hour or two to get in to the city itself from there. Sarasas is a chain of schools which pay a reasonable amount of money, but which have a terrible reputation as far as administration is concerned. Have a look on the ajarn.com forum for more details. I would highly recommend finding a job once you are here instead. |

Insanity's advice is spot on. Don't accept a job in Thailand over the net. Come to Thailand after maybe setting up some interviews via the internet beforehand. Be picky and take your time. Check ajarn's job board to see what kind of jobs are available, but also try to find out who's not advertising. Most of the jobs on the net aren't the best ones.
Now is not really the right time though. Try to show up late April after the Thai New Year or in May.

Thanks so much guys for the information. I will definitely take your advise to heart. CAan anyone direct me to a few good schools once I get to Thailand? I don't want to get off of the plane and be lost. Any leads would be very helpful. Thanks again!

Go to ajarn.com once you're here and check them out yourself. "Good" schools aren't hiring all the time as they can actually retain their staff.
But there's an easy test. If the school's within 10 minutes (by foot) of a BTS or subway station (if it's in Bangkok), pays you more than 40,000B a month (32,000 or more if not in Bangkok), has you on a Monday to Friday schedule, gives you at least a month's vacation time, and has a definte teacher-training program (usually a required meeting once a week, or something like that) in place, it's a good school. If you can find three or four of those conditions at any one school that school might be worth a look.
Let me stress the importance of that first condition for Bangkok. There are plenty of good schools that don't meet it, but if your school does meet it then it means easy to/from work every day, billions of overtime opportunities should you want them, vastly increased access to privates, and cheaper accomodation in a better neighborhood.
Where are you in China? If you're frugal in Thailand you can get by on 10USD a day (20USD is much more reasonable, though), and if your China job really sucks, and if you have money saved, your heart might thank you for just leaving now and taking a few month's vacation here. But as has already been mentioned, you'll be most likely to find a good job come the end of April/early March. |
