1. On what date does the August/September semester start?

2. Does the immigration dept in Hong Kong have a problem with people flying in on a one-way ticket?

Roger, thanks for your very helpful advice.

Most public schools have set the commencement date of the summer semester in stone at 1st of September though many require teachers to report in noo later than the Friday before that date.

I have never head of people having encountered any inconvience at HK immigration counters for not having a round-trip or onward ticket.

each school seems to set their own dates. Some of the teachers in my college came in two or 3 weeks after school started and they hired a new guy the last month of november.

I flew into HK with a one-way ticket in 2003. They never asked me a single question.

I went to HK last June on a one-way ticket without any problems from HK Immigration Office.

Hi,
thanks for sharing your experience. I think it's fantastic that people on this forum are so helpful and willing to share. It's a happy little cycle. People who are helped are then keen to help others when they can. Karma. Very Happy

Anyway, enough happy feelgood ramblings with pixies and elves and magic little frogs with pointy little ears..........(note to self- shut up now)

As it turns out, I bought a return ticket yesterday as it was a QANTAS special deal and cheaper than any one-way ticket I could find. AUS$883 incl taxes (Brisbane-HK)

I hope to buy a 3-6month tourist visa when I arrive in May, look for a uni job as I travel and then head back to HK or Thailand if necessary to get a z-visa before starting work in the new semester at the end of August.

Any tips, advice or warnings of potential pitfalls are most welcome.

cheers,
Tony
