I am in the final days of my contract at a school in Wuxi Jiangsu province and would like to sign on with another school in the neighborhood .
The problem is that the new school doesn't know the procedures for getting me the new visa . They want me to do the footwork for them . Is this a problem or do you need to always go thru recruiters in China ?
This may be an inane problem but I have only been in China one year .

first question you should ask is "does the school have the permission to hire foreign teachers?"

if the answer is yes, they need to talk with the police department and the Foreign Affairs office of the city. They should have a manual that outlines the procedure.

if the answer is no.....

To change jobs after your first year there is no need to obtain a new visa. All you need from the school is the letter of release, which should be stamped by the school and the PSB. Present this to your new school, they in turn will have your resident permit extended for the duration of your new contract.

The only problem you may have is the expiration date on your current resident permit. Your present school may have to extend this for a short period to allow you the time to make the change.

If the company has a legit business license, but no permit to emply foriengers you can apply for a permit to employ foriengers for them. But if you can't speak fluent Chinese make sure you take a savy translator otherwise mistakes will happen.

To sum up, if they have a business license they can employ you.

If they avoid answering the question regarding if they have a business license or not, the chances are they don't want to tell you they don't have one.

Investigate it fully.
