i'm reading the WHV application form now and it says:

"Proof of funds: You are required to provide your most recent formal bank statement or bank passbook detailing the previous three months transations and showing funds in excess of $2500. Please note that these funds should be in addition to your airline ticket or the funds you may have reserved for such.

Automatic teller printouts, computer printouts or interim statements are not acceptable. Applicants must show that they have been saving for their trips and so lump sum amounts that have been deposited prior to applying for the visa will not be accepted."

wow! what do you think? That might be a bit tricky for me at the moment. I can get that cash, but I was looking at a lump sum amount

That's new I think.

I recommend you call your closest Japanese consulate and tell them that you've come into a bit of money (gift or inheiritance).... Would they accept bringing in travellers cheques as adequate proof?

That's what I did. I brought in $2500 worth of traveller's cheques... They OKed my visa...

Then I went back to the bank and got a full refund on the traveller's cheques. The bank wasn't too impressed with me, but I explained why I was doing this and they were OK with it... I re-deposited my money into my account. (I HATE traveller's cheques)...

If that is true, it is completely new. I returned to Japan two years ago, I did not have a flight ticket out of Japan, and I only had a tourist visa. No one looked at my bank book. However, I spoke to the guy in Japanese and I had lived here for more than five years, before returning.

I think the above advice is sound, call the Japanese consulate. I can't imagine Japan would make such a law that would hinder tourist.
