|
|
I am currently in Vietnam and thinking about heading north to Laos. From what I hear, Vientiane is quiet and low rise (compared to VN where buildings are narrow and built to the sky) and somewhat friendlier and less money-oriented than VN. What I am wondering about is the English teaching scene--is there one and, if so, what are the schools like? How difficult is it to find housing on your own and what are the options until you do (cheapish hotels or guesthouses)? How long would it take to get set up there, and how much cash in hand would be recommended to start with? Please don't bother to tell me about the bar scene--not interested.
Any useful info on what it would be like to live and work in Vientiane would be appreciated. Thanks. |

Have a look at www.mekongesl.com.
There is some info about WiangJan [Vientiane] on the discussion forum there under the "jobs" section. Steph28 has posted extensively. There are also a couple of jobs on the jobs page. |

Just adding some mo' info...
yes, there's is a teaching "scene" in Vientiane but nothing like HCMC if that's where you're at in VN. Vientiane has a population of only about 500,000. So there are some schools there, but not that many. There are numerous cheap guesthouses and hotels, but you can probably find a house to rent. Don't think that you'll make much cash there, but it would be a veeerrryyy laidback existence. |

Vientiane is a great ''city''. It's peaceful, relaxed and has got the best beer in Asia. However, it is now pretty full of tourists as more and more people are visiting and as it is so small, their number appears gratly accentuated. It is also very dusty. But food is fab, and if you can avoid the touristy centre with the hardened tuk tuk drivers, you will have a fab time |

I don't know but it sounds pretty good to me. Does anyone have any more specific information? The suggested link to the Lao yellow pages (www.yplao.com) never seems to work. Also, I'd be very interested to have anyone weigh in who's been living in Vientiane for awhile. Thanks. |
