Hi, this is officailly my first post.... I have to say that I find these forums very informative and sometimes very entertaining. I am interested in spending a couple of months in Mexico this summer, and am interested in volunteering. I will have a college degree from a technical school, and am TESOL certified.
I am not set on a destination, but would like to hear if anyone has any suggestions on what would be a good way to go about finding people to teach. This is rather vague, but I would like to hear what you experienced people have to say. I have seen that there are a lot of positions through churches, however I have yet to have picked up a religion so far in life.
Thanks for your time.

Welcome to the forum! We are an informative and oddball bunch aren't we?
I haven't seen much in Mexico by way of volunteering outside religious missions. That which I have seen in places like Oaxaca and Chiapas charge a scandalous amount of money to VOLUNTEER one's time (?) Do watch out.
If you are adventurous, you might try just showing up somewhere like Oaxaca and see what's on the ground locally. |

Thanks for the reply. What you stated is mostly what I have found. I am not interested in paying for someone to set me up with a volunteering position. Something just doesn't seem right there......
I like the suggestion about just showing up. I am going to Puerto Vallarta for a week this month and would be interested in looking around a smaller town within a couple of hours of there. Does anyone have any advice as to who in the communities I could talk to about finding a position?
Thanks again,
Sherri |

The orphanages in most places would gladly accept someone to do classes for the children. Find an inexpensive apartment and go for it. You could also check with the public schools to see if they could set up a schedule for you. They don't get much English in the public school systems. You sure don't need to pay someone to do that for you....but if you insist...please email me! LOL |

Check out freethechildren.com. They have a few schools in Mexico and seem to really help out communities, not religious either. I don't know if they need ESL vollunteers. Cheers! Maria |
