Hi all. I've been lurking around here for a while and figured it was about time I got an account and asked a question. I'm about 2 inches (~5cm) away from plunging into a certificate program here in SF (TransWorld) and I want to know if any of you have any experience with the EF school in Solo (Surakarta).

The only information I've been able to glean from this board about Solo is that the EF school there is run by a jerk who also runs the one in Yogya. To Quote Guruengerish:
Quote:
"In my opinion, the comments made about EF in Yogya have been fair and factual. The EF chain in that part of the world (Solo,Semarang and Yogya) are all owned by the one guy. He didn't want to be the Direcotr, but he was landed with the job. Now he wants to make money out of the venture.

The schools are all severely underpaid and poorly resourced. Yogya had mostly second hand material when I was there, including computers."

How bad is bad?
Does anyone have any recent first hand experience with EF Solo?
Would it be a bad place to take a first time teaching job, or worse for a veteran?
Are any of the smaller schools in Solo reputable?
What about the university there, can't remember its name off hand, I was told once that the universities in Indonesia can be good places to teach, but I haven't heard them mentioned once on this board (which makes me suspicious of that claim).

Any help you could offer me would be greatly appreciated.

Gajah Oling - Hi, my question for you is did you start Transworld? I live in SF when I'm in the US and continue thinking about attending that school. But so far I just keep thinking since I've already been working in China w/o cert. But I too want to work down in Indonesia so I'll need to get one before I do.

Can you tell us anything about your experiences there in Transworld?

Cheers, Rowdy

Hi Arodeorowdy, I haven't actually started at TransWorld yet, but just audited a class there last week (the next session doesn't begin until April). It looks to me like a good school from what I've saw. I also have a friend going there, about to complete the program, who's said he's learned a lot from the 10 weeks he's put in there. A fella on this board, Wooskie, is also currently going there. You could probably PM him if you want to know more about the program.

An added benefit for those who haven't taught before, aside from all the student teaching hours they have you put in, is that they have a lot of employment resources (apparently have a good relationship with EF for what that's worth) for helping their graduates in becoming gainfully employed overseas.
