I want to change my school although I still have 7 months of my contract to run.
Where does this leave my visa situation?
Do I need another visa to change schools?
If I need to change visa, can I do this in Japan?

You can work on your current visa until it expires. When you renew it you will need a new sponsor for your visa, probably your new employer. If you want to change sponsors of your visa you will need a letter of release from your employer but otherwise you can work problem-free on the same visa.
If you have a work visa (from one to another e.g. instructor to humanities, not renewal or extension of the same visa), you can change it in Japan by applying for a change of status form at the immigration office. |

When I changed jobs, all I had to do was go to City office and change the info on my registration card. The never said anything about needing a letter from my previous employer.
The only time you need a sponser is when you are renewing your Visa. |
