l would like to hear about some experiences people have had driving in Mexico.. Anything amusing or interesting.

I do have a question. Has anyone been stopped (driving your own vehicle that is registered in the States or Canada) without the Mexican vehicle registration past the border zone (free trade zone) by the police? If so, let me hear about it.

I drove a Mexican car in Mexico and the only trouble I ever had with the cops was for driving on a Hoy No Circula day, I was from out of state and it never occured to me to check.

A pair of the worst of AMLO's cleaned-up pigs stopped me and demanded a ton of money so as not to impound the car. I didn't even get the option to park the car and pick it up the next day. Keep out of Mexico City because the cops there are the worst scum in uniform you'll find south of the Pentagon.

I am south of DF and in December the police here had a big deal with pulling over cars with foreign plates and demanding bribes. I just gave them a bunch of paperwork, both in Spanish and in English. They wanted more and more paperwork, but I realized they couldn�t read any of it, and they finally let me go. The stupid thing is that I had done nothing wrong, so they had no reason to pull me over in the first place. The second thing is the police can not ask to see you car documents...only the migra can ask to see these.

A friend of mine ended up paying a huge mordida right after Christmas. Her Spanish skills aren�t good and she was taken advantage of.

My advice is to stand your ground and keep on talking you way out of things. If they want a bribe, demand to be taken to the police station to talk to the boss, even if it is a Sunday or late at night. Also, the the names of the officers and the number of their car. You can report them if you want to. It also seems to help if you have at least one Mexican in the car...the police tend to bother you less if there are Mexicans with you.
